The Paper Lion Gallery is pleased to announce that acclaimed regional painter Sandra Philpott has chosen our gallery as the location for the unveiling of a series of swan portraits she has recently completed entitled “Ivan’s Swans.” The intimate exhibit will open with a reception on November 19th, 2016 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at the gallery. Also on exhibit will be nature photography by a new young artist, Madeline Marie Wilson, Sandra’s Granddaughter. The public is invited to attend the opening with ample parking available on the street and behind the gallery.

“Why Ivan’s Swans?”
Sandra has specialized in portraits of people and animals for many years. This series of paintings was inspired by the dedication of “Ivan” a Perry County naturalist whose land and resources has supported a family of swans over the past three years. Male and female swans look identical, discernible only by laboratory DNA analysis. The pair of adult swans in Ivan’s charge produced two cygnets whose sometimes awkward development is portrayed in Sandra’s paintings. Ivan is a solitary man who has always been protective of nature and the animals that live on his idyllic land.

The Paintings:
Sandra’s visual interpretation of Ivan’s swan family utilizes a rich pallet of subtle coloration in the many shades of white that are present in the swan’s feathering. Her unique connection with the birds is richly reflected in each painting. A wide range of emotional imagery is depicted in this series, from parental protectiveness to the awkwardness of the cygnets (baby swans) growth. The artist states that “This show is a celebration of the beauty, fragility and renewal of life. It is a visual love poem for the swans and the man who cares for them.”                                                                                                  madelenes-flower-low
